SEROPREVALENCIA DE ANTICUERPOS CONTRA LOS VIRUS HTLV-I/II EN PACIENTES LEUCÉMICOS DEL HOSPITAL UNIVERSITARIO “ANTONIO PATRICIO DE ALCALÁ”, CUMANÁ, VENEZUELA

Abstract

RESUMEN: Se evaluó la seroprevalencia de los virus linfotrópicos de células T (HTLV- I/II) en 80 pacientes leucémicos de ambos sexos, con edades comprendidas entre los 10 y 90 años, que accedieron de forma voluntaria a participar en la investigación, procedentes de la consulta de Hematología del Hospital Universitario “Antonio Patricio de Alcalá” en Cumaná, estado Sucre, Venezuela, conducida durante el periodo mayo 2007 a mayo 2008. Se obtuvo información básica de cada paciente por medio de una encuesta, y se determinó la presencia de anticuerpos (IgM e IgG) anti-HTLV-I/II en sangre mediante el análisis de inmunoensayo indirecto (ELISA). Los resultados evidenciaron la presencia de anticuerpos anti-HTLV-I/II en tres pacientes, lo cual representó una prevalencia de la infección del 3,75%. Dos pacientes infectados con HTLV-I/II se ubicaron en el grupo 31 a 50 años de edad, pertenecientes al género masculino y con hepatomegalia. Los tres presentaron hábitos heterosexuales y habían recibido transfusiones sanguíneas y tratamiento quimioterapéutico para el momento del estudio. Además, dos pertenecieron al grupo étnico mestizo y uno al indígena, y la mayoría con diagnóstico de leucemia linfoide aguda (LLA). La prevalencia del HTLV-I/II en los pacientes leucémicos evaluados pudiera indicar que la morbilidad por estos virus es importante en la región. ABSTRACT: Seroprevalence of the lymphotrophic viruses of T-cells HTLV-I/II was evaluated in 80 patients with leukemia, of both sexes, between 10 and 90 years old. These patients came from the Hematology service of the University Hospital “Antonio Patricio de Alcala”, in Cumaná, Sucre state, Venezuela, and voluntarily participated in this research, conducted between May 2007 and May 2008. Each patient filled out a survey and a blood sample was taken to determine the presence of antibodies (IgM and IgG) anti-HTLV-I/II by means of ELISA test. The results show the presence of antibodies anti-HTLV-I/II in three patients, which represents a 3.75% prevalence of the infection. Two patients were males between 31 and 50 years old with hepatomegaly. All three had heterosexual tendencies and had been receiving blood transfusions and chemotherapy at the time of the study. In addition, two of them were of mixed race and one was indigenous, most were diagnosed with acute (lymphoblastic/ lymphocytic) leukemia (ALL). The prevalence of HTLV-I/II in the patients with leukemia evaluated, appears to indicate that the morbidity by these viruses is important in this region.
