ABSTRACT: The red mangrove Rhizophora mangle, presents a biological community composed by numerous organisms in their roots. The macroalgae associated to roots of R. mangle was studied in six stations distributed in the coast of the Gulf of Santa Fe (Sucre State, Venezuela) from October 1998 to September 1999. Sampling were performed by denuding two roots in situ by station, the algae and invertebrates were separated and preserved in 5% formalin solution. The algae study was done by morfo-anatomical observation and taxonomic keys were used. 27 species: were identified 15 Rhodophyta, 8 Chlorophyta and 4 Phaeophyta. The more constant species were Ulva reticulata, Sargassum vulgare, Galaxaura marginata and Acanthophora spicifera. In the nearest station to Santa Fe river delta the red algae Caloglossa leprieurii and Polysiphonia subtilissima were observed. The roots of R. mangle constitute an appropriate substratum for the macroalgae establishment. |
